Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

The growing complexity of surgical procedures has increased the need for blood. Approximately 50% of blood transfusions in hospital are performed in the surgical field. 30% of patients undergoing major surgery present preoperative anemia. The concept of saving Blood Protocol aims at the optimization of erythropoiesis, decrease blood loss and optimize patient tolerance to anemia.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

The goal of this practice is to assess the adequacy of transfusions in the intensive care unit based on recommendations issued by current clinical practice guidelines on the subject.
The information source is a database extracted from the electronic medical record that takes into account the value fields of hemoglobin before transfusion and hemoglobin value after transfusion . This information can be set up optional applicant GRD or CIE .
The processing of these data allow us to implement measures for the appropriate use of blood and blood conservation .
We are currently analyzing and the first results suggest that there is great variability when applying for a transfusion based on hemoglobin value prior to transfusion .
After communicating the results to the rest of the department and having strengthen transfusion criteria accepted by the major scientific societies a gauge to monitor whether the criteria are followed has been built.
In addition, another complementary objective is to adapt the requested profiles containing many parameters sometimes unnecessary, avoiding a single analytical multitube packs, and the use of pediatric tubes extractions.
We believe that this is a clinical practice that can be extrapolated to any unit or facility, since it does not require additional financial resources and has a great impact on patient safety
