Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

“The Patient Safety Champions” initiative provides healthcare professionals with an insight into the patient’s world. The Patient Safety Champions put real faces on the work of the health personnel and is meant as a means to influence the working culture at e.g. hospitals. The overall aim is to prevent adverse events and promote the cooperation between patients and the healthcare system.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

In cooperation with WHO Global Alliance for Patient Safety, the Danish Society for Patient Safety established a corps of 15 Patient Safety Champions in April 2007. The Patient Safety Champions are patients - or close relatives to patients - that have experienced an adverse event in the healthcare system. Their common interest is to help prevent it from happening to others and to promote the cooperation between patients and the healthcare system.

The Patient Safety Champions have developed a set of recommendations to healthcare professionals on how to respond when a patient has been harmed. They participate in patient safety walks at hospitals and teach young doctors in patient communication. Furthermore, they participated in the “Say Sorry” initiative for health personnel on how to communicate with patients when things go wrong. Finally, they create public awareness by participating in relevant fairs and events.

It is possible to book a Patient Safety Champion to tell his/her story.
