Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

“Just Ask” aims to prevent silent misdiagnoses by helping patients prepare for the conversations, which they have with health personnel at the hospital. The benefits of the "Just Ask" is that patients will make the most out of conversations with health personnel, if they are prepared. Both patients and the health personnel will profit from it, if patients ask questions about topics important to them, as it will entail that they get the answers and information need. "Just Ask" will empower the patient to handle the situation and involve the patient in decision making about the care they will receive. "Just Ask" was developed as part of the Safer Patient project in Denmark. Just Ask can be used online or ordered as an booklet. Patients, relatives and hospitals can order "Just Ask".
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

“Just Ask” is a guide to help patients to prepare for meetings with e.g. doctors. You can find an English version online: http://just-ask.dk/ Just ask has developed a list of suggestions for questions that are good to ask in different phases of a course of treatment: - Examinations - Treatment - Hospitalized - Discharge.
E.g. for examination the following questions are suggested. The patient can use the formulated questions and/or his or her own.
1. Are there alternative ways to be examined for these symptoms?
2. What are the next steps in my examination?
3. What answers can I expect the examination to give?
4. Which hazards are connected with this examination and does it hurt?
5. How can I best prepare for the examination?
6. When do I get the results of the examination? Who shall I contact if I do not receive the results?
