Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

Organization of early and effective care to patients who, in a Primary Healthcare center, have chest pain and, especially, those who have clinical or electrocardiographic findings of acute myocardial infarction.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

When a patient has pain in the chest and we suspect that suffers from an acute coronary syndrome, then we start the following care process:
1. The professional who performs the first patient's care or contact (physician, nurse, or any other worker, not necessarily healthcare professional) , notifies to the emergency team
2. The patient is transferred to the advanced life support, or emergency room. If this is not possible we give assistance in site
3. We make patient ECG and connect to a defibrillator. Through a venous access the administration of the necessary medication starts
4. The sanitary transport is simultaneously notified to take the patient to the hospital (advanced care ambulance). If the advanced care ambulance is not available, the patient is driven in the basic care ambulance accompanied by the emergency team or the doctor and the patient's nurse.
Once a year all the staff (healthcare and non healthcare workers) make practices of basic and advanced life support, for a week, in small groups with manikins and simulators CPR material. An internal audit is performed annually (by professionals from our management area, never by professionals from our own healthcare center) as well as an external audit (by a certifying company, since we are certified by ISO 9001:2008). The audit includes all the activities of the health center, including emergency.
