Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

Every moment of a disease is a difficult time for children and their families. The most challenging situations, however, are when the young patient and his family are forced, due to the complexity and rarity of the disease, to move far away to a different city or region or country.
The ‘’Family service’’ ( ‘’Accoglienza e servizi per la Famiglia) at Bambino Gesu Hospital was built specifically for these families. It is our primary objective to help families in times of need and loneliness, in order to make them feel loved and respected, as a part of our larger family.
The ‘’Accoglienza e servizi per la Famiglia’’ at Bambino Gesu Children's Hospital, research Hospital accredited JCI since 2006, is composed of a front line service and 12 additional back office services, such as ‘The hours of a old Clock’, structured to take care of the child and family for all non-clinical affairs.
Our motto is: never stop caring your child
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

The ‘’Accoglienza and Family Services’’ at Bambino Gesu Hospital is composed of a front line service and 12 back office services, structured to take care of the child and family for all non-clinical aspects.

Implementation
In 2012, services were gathered into various activities consisting of:
Front line: there is a Reception and Information Desk in all four hospital locations. The philosophy of the personnel devoted to the activities of front line is being available at all times to families by providing information, guidance, and above all, taking care of any problems. Staff is available every day of the week including holidays, including 2 additional call centers.

1. Accommodation Services: through shelters and hotel networks, the hospital has more than 150 rooms to accommodate families free of charge: in 2012 the hospital accepted over 4,500 families (about 13,500 people, more than 100,000 nights per year).
The core objective is dedicated to needy families in which it offers hotel accommodation free of charge. To access the following is a process that starts a triage carried out by Social Services based on household income, the underlying disease of the child, and length of stay.

2. "Red Carpet": for families who come from a far, we first contact the family to introduce and assess needs (housing , social assistance , etc.). Before admission, the family is contacted by the Service, who is aware of their case from information acquired by clinicians. The family and patient will receive assistance and care from the same service operator who has initially helped them. The family will receive all the information about the structure and facilities of the Hospital (summarized in a guide), a small kit/diary of living for the child, and the indications on the possible accommodation available. The assistant of the service department will accompany the family throughout the hospital to introduce to and entrust the staff present.
