Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

Our goal is to raise awareness among professionals about the adverse events and incidents that can occur during the patient's stay in the hospital. In order to achieve this it has been necessary to promote and foster a culture of patient safety through the continous education program provided by the hospital.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

In the last five years 14 monographic seminars on patient safety aimed both at clinical and other profesional have been held in the hospital. Sincé 2006 a specific module on patient safety has been included in the basic and advanced courses on quality organized annually by the hospital. Sincé 2007 one/two editions of a 30/50 hour accredited course on patient safety have been offered.
96 professionals have attended the seminars and 280 have participated in the courses .
The first editions combined conferences and practical workshops including the discussion of clinical cases. The last two editions have been on-line.
The main contents covered are:
Module1.- General concepts of patient safety
Module 2.- Medication safety
Module 3.- Pediatrics safety
Module 4.- Pharmacovigilance
Module 5.- Healthcare-associated infection
Module 6.- Safety surgery
A pre-post survey on knowledge is used to evaluate the performance as well as the practical exercises and activities included in the training courses.
The accreditation (certified by an official institution) guarantees the quality of the training. Specific performance requirements are requested to obtain the accreditation.
The costs are included in the annual training budget of the hospital and the trainers are professionals from the Clinical Safety Commission of the hospital.
