Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

Communication and the channels through which it occurs within hospital settings are critical for effective clinical care.
From the perspective of infection control nurse there is often a need to disseminate information rapidly to health care workers. One of the communication channels, as an example of good patient safety practice, is microbiological rounds on high risk wards.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

During the microbiological rounds at the high risk unit doctors and nurses have a direct communication with the members of infection control team (doctor-microbiologist and infection control nurse) and with the patient when it is appropriate. Rounds take place three times a week on intensive care units, hematology units, units with patients after solid organs transplantation and other units depending on the microbiological and epidemiological situation. Clinicians and microbiologist are discussing proper application and selection of antibiotic therapy on the basis of microbiological findings. Also, infection control nurse discuss isolation measures depending on the situation with other members of the round and makes education initiatives. This way of face to face communication is the optimal channel for behavioural change and provides the necessary interpersonal interactions for sharing knowledge, ideas and information between infection control team and other health care professionals at the same time.
Assessment of the impact of these communications on health care workers and patients is not performed, but requirements for those rounds and direct communication with infection control team are on the rise.
