Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

This is an educational patient safety practice addressing suicidal risk. It aims to qualify health care staff in communication with the psychiatric patients, the health care staff is also taught how to facilitate an interpersonal relationship so that communication can take place in a trustful atmosphere. The aimed effect on patient safety would be to create a trustful open atmosphere which will allow a higher level of exchange of information between health care staff and patients and thus prevent suicidal risk or facilitate early detection of suicidal risk.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

We have produced three short movies about how to understand and communicate with patient about suicidal risks as a foundation for good plans to prevent suicidal actions. The films are used for educational purposes to health care staff working in psychiatry – but they could also be used in other health care setting. The films are embedded in a workshop with oral presentation/teaching, dialogue, and hand out of a scientific article on clinical guidelines and screening for suicidal risk.
A professional film company help produce three movies. The company worked on a mixed voluntary/semi paid basis. All health care staff and patients worked voluntary during the production phase. A total of approx. 30 people were in involved during the production. The three films have a total length of approx. 25 min.
The first movie is about the understanding of the patient with this kind of problems - in layman’s terms the film describes philosophical, ethical, relational and psycodynamical issues on suicidal risk
The second movie shows through a role-play how it is possible for health care workers to make contact and work together with the patient, even though suicidal thoughts are totally taboo, getting to the point that communication about the issue is made possible, an action plan to prevent suicidal actions can be formed in cooperation between the patient and health care workers
The thirds movie shows how "Suicidal Status Form" can be implemented as a good tool for communication with the patient about suicidal risk in a psychiatric ward. Also focusing on how this tool can be used, not only for measuring the risk but also to empowerment the patient.

When asked the health care staff report that the films including the further educational programme, has shown itself effect full in building up competencies, and thus allowing health care staff to create a trustful atmosphere or a more open and informed culture around the patients.

The films can only be used for educational purposed, and they are in Danish language and have been share (downloadable) on the regional intranet. Further access to the films can be granted by contacting the reporter of this PSPs – se contact information below.
