Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice
 
Lack of standardized procedures aimed at checking functioning, safe use and presence of medical and electromedical equipment on board of emergency vehicles could cause serious adverse events to patients. It is therefore necessary to provide healthcare workers with a shared procedure aimed at minimizing the risk to carry out rescue mission without having fundamental equipment on board.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice
 
There has been developed a specific procedure to check presence of medical equipment on board of emergency vehicles, which integrates the indications in place concerning first aid. In particular, the following activities have been carried out: - A checklist has been provided to verify the equipment is in place - Guidelines have been given to healthcare workers on how to check presence of the equipment. The checklist is made up by 9 forms aimed at checking: - presence of necessary equipment, including bug-out bag, defibrillator and a list containing quantity of medicines and devices. – efficiency of the electromedical equipment onboard. – expiration dates of the medication contained in the bug out bag. – efficiency of the emergency vehicle. The annual assessment carried out in 2014 resulted in the following: n. of healthcare workers trained on the check 118/ total n. of workers 118; n. of checklist duly filled/ workshift= standard 100%.
