Description of the Patient Safety Practice
 
Since 2007, the Infectious Risk Area of the Health and Social Regional Agency of Emilia-Romagna (ASSR) has been promoting initiatives and activities to increase hand hygiene compliance in health-care workers in different health care settings with the involvement of all local facilities. In the region, different programs for improving the practice of hand hygiene in the health care facilities have been activated. The implementation of innovative approach proved to be effective in supporting and sustain awareness. Furthermore, hand hygiene activities in the facilities are evaluated annually at regional level monitoring the use of handrub solution and the results of the WHO Hand Hygiene Self-Assessment Framework (HHSAF), translated into Italian. Regional evaluation of activities for promoting hand hygiene, carried out by the health care facilities, was performed by the following methods: 2007 -2008 Before - After Study. Implementation of WHO Multimodal Hand Hygiene Improvement Strategy. 2009 -2010 Follow up - Direct observation of hand hygiene compliance by WHO Observation Form. Since 2010 – Annual monitoring - WHO Hand Hygiene Self-Assessment Framework (HHSAF) from all the public health care facilities in Emilia Romagna region. - Consumption of handrub solution from all the public health care facilities in Emilia Romagna region. 2014 Survey to describe low-budget high-impact local initiatives for hand hygiene promotion with. Questionnaire to staff in charge of Healthcare Associated Infection Prevention and Control and of antimicrobial stewardship. 2015 - On going activities: Centralized regional data collection through open software based application tool for mobile devices. This tool allows direct observation of hand hygiene 5 moments, provides immediate feedback statistics and is freely available to all public or private health facilities in the Emilia Romagna region.
