The Emilia-Romagna Region has dedicated attention about the problem of missing patient from hospital or other healthcare settings.
The patient moving away from healthcare organization without the staff knowing it represents an event involving different problems for both the patient and the organization.
Taking into consideration the consequences that may result, it would be appropriate that healthcare organizations produce clear guidelines and specific instructions about the actions to be implemented when this event occurs.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

In 2013 the Regional Health Service produced guidelines to help Healthcare organizations developing their own procedures to prevent or manage this event. In 2015 the Regional Hospital Service of Emilia-Romagna has coordinated a team of professionals that have been promoting analysis and systematization of those procedures. Thanks to this work, the document “Guidelines for prevention and management of missing patients from healthcare organizations” has been developed and sent to all the regional organizations for the application.
