Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

The objective of the project is to extend the opening hours of the ICU so as to:
- foster a more human critical care
- involve relatives in the care process and create a relationship of trust and transparency.
The presence of family or, more generally, of the patient’s loved ones is a positive factor for the
patient, giving comfort, and reducing anxiety and stress. Furthermore, the presence of family has not been shown to cause any alteration in parameters such as heart rate, blood pressure and intracranial pressure.
On the other hand, family members can be more informed on the care process.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

Intensive care units traditionally have a closed structure in Italy. They generally have highly restrictive visiting policies, limiting the admission and attendance of family members. This practice deals with the issue of open intensive care unit (ICU), a unit oriented towards the implementation of non-restrictive visiting policies and committed to removing all barriers that have no justifiable necessity, on the level of time, on the physical level and on the level of relationships.
The project was divided into the following steps:
- Sharing the project with the team
- Conducting literature review
- Training course
- Guided tour in an open Intensive Care Unit
- Discussion group with all healthcare professionals
- Involving relatives (brochure, advertisement signs, structural change).
The opening hours have been extended (11 am to 11 pm).
The results have been evaluated through infection monitoring and customer satisfaction surveys for patients and relatives.
Results show no atistically significant differences regarding: - the number of episodes of VAP (ventilator -associated pneumonia) - the number of episodes of UTI (urinary tract infection) - the number of episodes of bacteremia - mortality
