Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

The future goal in quality improvement is developing a real, consistent safety culture, with people actively taking action to promote safe behavior. How can we measure this culture? AHRQ has proposed some surveys to examine trends and areas of interest.
The objective of this practice has been to develop and test a questionnaire based on AHRQ surveys to steer choices in the fields of training and development of safety culture.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

The survey we have been developing- adapted from AHRQ- includes 22 items of patient safety culture. 450 questionnaires have been distributed to nurses and paramedical staff and we got answers to 338 of them.
The results have been examined and discussed with nurses and discussion was useful to guide corrections and implementation in behavior and education. The short questionnaire has been used experimentally to get indications about the needs for training of nurses. The questionnaire was adapted from the l AHRQ and the Italian quastionnaire Pascal (http://www.cro.sanita.fvg.it/asp/isis/Archivio/Progetto_Pascal_CollazzoGiacominiMasutti.pdf): in the full version 51 items were, while in the one adopted by AOUTS are 22 items. The professionals responded according to the following proportions: nurses 75%, healthcare assistants /technicians 22% , other 3% . The results obtained clearly indicate a widespread participation in quality programs, with some resistance in the relevant reporting of near misses.
