Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

This patient safety practice has aim to reduce the number of patient falls. Our staff is fully dedicated to improve patient safety and to organize safe conditions. The patients can benefit from that because in that way we can prevent possible injuries that can be caused by falling down.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

Ljeciliste Topusko, one of the biggest and well - known Rehabilitation center (Spa) in continental part of Croatia, is based on balneotherapy. Being aware of that fact, the risk of patient fall is greater than in other institutions. We had to act and try to predict all situations in which fall can happen and prevent it. Our leading thought is to be ideal and prevent each fall that could occur, therefore we are putting a lot of effort in prevention of patient falls.
Our pools, baths, wardrobes, halls and hotel rooms are center of concern.
The most important thing is to predict situations and outcomes, as well as the assessment of the patients/clients at their arrival, and of course their and their family involvement in the patient safety process. The leading role in prevention of the fall have employees of Ljeciliste Topusko (medical and non- medical) who are educated to act in all kind of situations. Education plays great role in this. Our personnel is well educated and instructed for handling well mobile patients as well as those with serious balance, gait and mobility problems. Every physiotherapist has to walk the patient to the tub, be by the side and help them enter and get out of the tub, instruct them to wear appropriate shoes when walking in areas where water is used for therapy purpose. Also, warning signs are present where needed (all points of our center of concern) and accompaniment (helper) is assigned to gravely mobile patients/clients to help them in any kind of transfer, standing up, dressing, walking and helping the therapist who has to be by the side when patient/client enters any kind of tub (underwater massage tub, Hubbard tub, local tubs), assist them or use lift platform in case they judge the risk of fall could occur. Our floors are specially taken care of to prevent slipperiness. We invested in changing our floors where standard ones are replaced with anti-slip ones (mostly quartz anti-slip floors) but patients are, anyway, instructed to wear appropriate footwear.
Since we started, practice has shown to be successful. As we do not have statistics from before the practice, it is impossible to compare it with objective pieces of information. Interviewing our personnel became clear that the effort we have put in preventing patient falls gave very good results. Not only that our patients feel safe, they also showed in comments of our questionnaire that our institution “grew in quality of patient care” in last year, what we are especially proud of. This practice does not bring new ideas in preventing patient falls but shows that education plays a great role in quality of patient care. Still, we need to continue the education and assessment of the results because now we have first objective results with which we can compare new results and build up where we are not so strong yet.
