Aim and the benefit of the Patient Safety Practice

In the medical subspecialities anaesthesiology, intensive care and emergency medicine a large variety of technical medical equiment is used. For the physicians and nurses in these areas it is almost impossible to familiarize themselves with the technical details and the user manuals of all devices during their regular working time. This could lead to erroneous handling and consecutive harming of the patient. The PSP presented here offers a time and cost efficient way to familiarize a lot of physicians and nurses with many devices in a short time. To assure a high quality of the training we ask product specialists of the manufacturers to present their devices in groups of up to ten trainees. All questions will be answered at the end of each session. Every session lasts between 15 and 90 minutes depending on the complexity of the device and is repeated until the end of the course.
Description of the Patient Safety Practice

In our concept of a familiarisation course held at regular time intervals about 50 devices are placed in an educational facility, so that the colleagues can walk from device to device to get instructions how to use the devices by company representatives. The training is adressed to physicians and nurses working in anaesthesiology, intensive care, intermediate care or in the emergency department. Additionally medical students are encouraged to attend the course as the operation of medical devices is not regularly included in their study. The complete course is usually held between 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. It covers about 45 different medical devices. Every session (one medical device) is continuously repeated and lasts between 15 and 90 minutes. The participants are being paid for the course on an overtime basis. At the end of the course we collect evaluation sheets filled out by the product specialists and the participants. We usually get very good ratings from all.
